Cup Rhythms: Part 1

Lesson 4

In this fourth lesson we recap over the last few lessons to further embed our learning and to see what elements have been retained. This lesson also looks at refining our compositions and adapting them to work in larger in groups. This lesson helps introduce ensemble skills, particularly around team working.

Preparation:

  • Check and watch each of the video links and check they work and you understand each task.

  • There will be group working required in this lesson for between 4-6 people.

  • Download a worksheet for each person or each group, if preferred.

  • Each group/person will need a pen or pencil.

  • You’ll need one cup per person.

Activity 1 - Warm up

Pass The Cup Level 2 – 5 mins

Attempt to play pass the cup game level 2. This time you will hear 2 instructions before you follow them back.

  • Set the playback speed to normal in the video settings.

  • Make sure the class are sat facing in partners or in a circle so they can pass the cup.

  • Remember the following instructions: pass the cup, tap the cup, turn the cup, da dum dum and da digga dum.

  • Follow the video and join in.

Activity 3 - Compose

Cup Compositions Part 2 - 15mins

  • Get the class into groups of 4-6 people.

  • Make sure each group has a worksheet and a pen/pencil.

  • Task 1 - look over the compositions from the previous week and spend a couple of minutes discussing what worked well and what was challenging?

  • Task 2 - compose a 4 beat cup rhythm that must include a ‘turn the cup’ and a ‘pass the cup’.

    • what rhythm will you choose? eg. ta/te-te/rest

    • what action/sound will happen on each beat?

  • Task 3 - practice the rhythm you have composed

  • Extension - can you think of a song/rhyme/chant that you could say whilst playing your rhythm?

Activity 2 - Recap

  • Make sure the group know the lyrics to song before attempting the full activity

  • Watch video and join in.

  • Can the group perform without the video? Can the group get faster whilst performing?
