Early Years Music
Music making for under 5s is vital for holistic development. At this stage, children enhance language, social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Music activities encourage creativity and self-expression, enabling communication beyond words. They also improve motor skills through clapping, tapping, and dancing, promoting coordination essential for physical growth. Rhythm and melody help develop listening skills crucial for language and literacy. Group music activities teach teamwork, turn-taking, and empathy, fostering cooperation and emotional intelligence. In summary, music making is essential for nurturing well-rounded, emotionally intelligent, and creative individuals prepared for future challenges.
Welcome to Gateshead Music Service's Early Years Music Program. We offer a 6-week program of 1-hour sessions, focusing on Music for Nursery and Reception, adaptable for ages from birth to preschool. The program uses traditional and new songs for children to sing, dance, and play percussion. It helps them learn musical elements like tempo, dynamics, pitch, and rhythm while developing their singing skills.
Music learning for ages birth to 5 is informed by Kodaly, Dalcroze, and educators like Len Tyler, using beloved songs and activities developed over 20 years. The Gateshead Music Service EYFS Music Program aligns with the Musical Development Matters Framework by Nicola Burke, emphasizing Hearing and Listening, Moving and Dancing, Exploring and Playing, and Vocalising and Singing. Music enhances all areas of the Early Years Framework and supports children's musical skills and appreciation.
Songs, rhyme games, and activities promote early musical understanding in fun ways. They establish a routine for teaching music, helping children become confident music makers and develop a love for the subject. The EYFS Music Program enhances speech, language, and listening skills, allowing non-verbal children to express themselves musically. The Early Years Team offers training to boost teachers' musical skills and confidence.
