School Music Development Plans

This page is designed to support schools self-evaluate music provision in their school, support them to identify development priorities and produce a school music development plan.

The DfE are asking all schools to have a music development plan, as set out in the national plan for music education. Schools should publish a summary of their music development plan on their website before the start of the 2024 to 2025 academic year. Schools should then update the summary before the start of each new academic year.

Publishing a summary will help schools to:

  • raise awareness of their music development plan

  • promote the school music offer to parents/caregivers and prospective parents/caregivers

  • give greater opportunity for schools and music hubs to work together

The Department for Education worked with teachers and leaders at both primary and secondary level to design the summary template, which you can find here.

The template is not mandatory, and schools should feel free to adapt it. For example, although it is designed for the whole-school level, some schools might find it helpful to adapt it for particular key stages.

Self-evaluation tool kit

To support schools with their music development plan we have produced this form as a self-evaluation tool kit. This will help schools to understand how they deliver against the key features of a high quality music provision as set by the DfE in The National Plan for Music Education.

Flowchart illustrating music curriculum progression from KS1 to KS3. Each key stage includes elements like timetabled music lessons, regular singing activities, termly performances, live performance opportunities, and access to instrumental lessons. Additional notes suggest school staff involvement, support from the Music Hub, and progression opportunities for students. The chart emphasizes forming school ensembles and choirs.
