Rhythm Basics -

Lesson 6

This is continuation from the previous lesson, reinforcing learning about rhythm, pulse and using Kodaly rhythm syllables. By end of this lesson the group should be able to read and clap patterns using crotchets, quavers, crotchet rests, semi quavers, and new rhythms mixing quavers and semi quavers and a half note or a minim.

Preparation:

  • Check and watch each of the video links and check they work and you understand each task.

  • Be in a space where the group can get into a large circle.

  • Have white boards and pens or paper for each person in the group.

Activity 1 - Warm up

This activity builds on the song the children learned last lesson:

“Who Stole My Chickens and my Hens”

  • Watch the video and join in

  • Ask half of the class to say the words of the song in their “thinking voice” and tap the words - the rhythm

  • The other half of the class can say or play “cluck” or play the end of each line

  • Ask the class to swap parts

Activity 2- Introducing a mix of ti and tika

In this activity, the children will recognise, read, and perform the new rhythms tika-ti and ti-tika improving rhythmic fluency and reading skills.

  • watch the video

  • Clapping/percussion—children can clap and say the rhythms, or they can use instruments like claves or rhythm sticks, or drum on the desk

  • Have a quick round where students recite or clap one rhythm type.

Activity 3 - Practice reading the new rhythms

This activity reinforces the new rhythms

  • Watch the video.

  • Pause each pattern to allow the children to work out the rhythm words

  • Practice each pattern

  • Try to say the patterns with the video

Activity 4 - Rhythm Reading Practice

On the Farm

In this activity, the children can practice clapping and saying the new rhythms

Whole notes are sometimes called semi breves, half notes are sometimes called minims

  • Watch the video

  • Ask the class to try drawing the different notes

Activity 7 - Practice longer note rhythms
